Assistant Superintendent, DSLE

Job Description:

The Assistant Superintendent, DSLE directs the daily operations of the railroad; executes and manages operational processes to maximize efficiency and safety, operates trains safely by complying with operating rules and train handling policies to transport freight in a satisfactory manner. Executes the mechanical operation of the train, train speed, and handling. Oversees and manages overall execution of the railroad operating plans, railroad strategy, safety strategy, process improvement initiatives, and other continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operation and the Federal Railroad Association (FRA)
  • Safe and efficient operation of locomotive
  • Complete accountability and oversight of 24/7 operations
  • Manage and ensure customer satisfaction and operational excellence
  • Participate in customer meetings to build positive relationships
  • Develop, approve and conduct periodic review of operating procedures for all railroad and terminal activities to include: technical, operational and support functions
  • Develop and maintain safety culture among all staff members
  • Participate in and promote regional and/or Corporate initiatives
  • Execute leadership aligned with Company’s strategic goals
  • Ensure all new employees receive training per protocol; monitor and participate in training and evaluation of all new hires
  • Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries
  • Wear required protective equipment such as: hard hats, hearing protection, safety-toe boots or safety glasses
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Exempt and non-exempt employees
  • Provide leadership, mentoring and guidance to team with execution of projects; set performance goals, and provide on-going coaching of employees to achieve career objectives, cultivate a high performance culture; build a leadership pipeline throughout the organization
  • Set the example, create and lead the culture of mutual respect, cooperation and attention to detail for employees to deliver profitable execution on business goals

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 5 year’s railroad operations experience
  • Minimum of two years’ supervisory experience in railroad operations
  • Thorough knowledge of and compliance to General Core of Operating Rules (GCOR), FRA requirements specific to the operation and movement of trains
  • Thorough knowledge of and compliance to railroad operations, including, but not limited to: Transportation, Maintenance of Way, Mechanical, and clerical activities
  • Detail oriented and customer focused
  • Leadership and mentoring skills: develop high performance team
  • Read, comprehend and comply with published rules, procedures and manuals, inspection checklists, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memo and other work-related information
  • Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills in operational issues resulting in effective resolution
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; effectively communicate with all level of employees and business associates in a clear, concise and professional manner
  • Professional integrity and accountability
  • Work in fast-paced collaborative environment

Required Certifications & Licenses:

  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications & Licenses:

  • Previous experience in Rail Transportation, Supply Chain Logistics, Manufacturing and/or Oil & Gas industries
  • Bachelors’ Degree
  • Designated Supervisors of Locomotive Engineers (DSLE)

Work Environment & Travel:

  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by the weather: snow, rain, heat, and sub-freezing temps; loud noise.
  • This position is based in South Point, OH
